The Green Man – Summer/Autumn 2002

We designed and constructed a 20’ high 26’ long illuminated and mobile sculpture of a “Flower God” for the 2002 Thames Festival. The sculpture was internally lit and decorated with over 6,000 individual pieces of artwork made in 300 1/2 day workshops in primary schools drawn from all 33 London Boroughs. The workshops were set-up, designed, managed and led by Spectral Arts, largely using reclaimed materials.

Constructed over 11 days in a transparent marquee situated at The London Eye over 6,000 members of the public per day were able to witness a large creative commission in progress.
The event was an overwhelming success with organised visits by children from the participating schools. Finally the sculpture was displayed for 5 days and then processed to critical acclaim as the Lord Mayors float and a centrepiece of the Thames Festival.

This job demonstrates not only our ability to successfully deliver extraordinary rugged and weather-proof public art but also our experience at working within the extremely rigorous health and safety restrictions that operate on commercial and public spaces.
